Dr Adam Taylor of Lancaster Medical School is to receive the American Association of Anatomists Basmajian Award.

This award recognizes health science faculty who "teach human or veterinary gross anatomy, can document excellence in their contribution to the teaching of gross anatomy, and have outstanding accomplishments in biomedical research or scholarship in education."

He will travel to Florida in April for the award ceremony.

Dr Taylor - the first person outside North America to receive the prize - said he is delighted to receive such a prestigious award.

"Anatomy is one of the broadest subject areas to have to teach and the level of knowledge and work involved in delivering anatomical education is huge. Recognition for my work is really nice to receive, and really appreciated.

"It’s the icing on top of a cake that is the reward of educating students who will use the knowledge you instil in them during their careers in medicine and healthcare to improve the lives of others.”

Dr Taylor began his career in Anatomy Education in 2007 as Demonstrator whilst doing his PhD. In 2011 he joined Lancaster Medical School as a Lecturer in Anatomy and in 2013 he took the lead for Anatomy as the Director of the Clinical Anatomy Learning Centre.

In 2016 Dr Taylor and his colleague Dr Quenton Wessels received the Lancaster University Student’s Union Undergraduate Teaching Award in recognition of their high-quality, engaging teaching.

In 2017 he was awarded the Lancaster University Pilkington Teaching award for excellence in teaching anatomy and the integration of novel teaching technologies such as Ultrasound and Anatomage Virtual Dissection Table in the curriculum.

In 2018 he teamed up with Zooniverse - the world’s largest platform for people-powered research – for an online citizen science project entitled “Where are my body organs?’

Dr Taylor is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and in 2018 he was nominated by Lancaster University for A National Teaching Fellowship, through AdvanceHE.

He is frequently invited to speak at conferences nationally and internationally and he also has a regular media profile publicising health and anatomy topics to a wider audience.
