Lancaster University Management School’s MBA programme has climbed an impressive 17 places to feature firmly in the world’s top 5 MBA programmes for entrepreneurship, the Financial Times rankings reveal today.

Lancaster is now ranked 4th out of 50 MBA programmes across the world for entrepreneurship. The Financial Times rankings also place the Lancaster MBA 1st in the world for corporate strategy, 3rd in the UK for its career service and 10th in the world for value for money. The overall programme is ranked 10th in the UK and 70th in the world in the same rankings.

This year’s league table was compiled using data from Lancaster’s 2014 MBA cohort. Of the group, 33 per cent went on to start their own companies, with 88 per cent still in operation. After completing the MBA, 75 per cent of the cohort said entrepreneurship was their main source of income.

Professor Angus Laing is the Dean of Lancaster University Management School. He said: "This success is testament to the dedication and quality of our teaching staff and the fantastic efforts of our world-class students. I’d like to offer all my warmest congratulations.

“Entrepreneurship has been a core part of the Lancaster MBA for many years. We focus on developing, in our students, the nexus of capabilities and attitudes of mind that underpin entrepreneurial activity. The development of this complex set of dispositions and skills is the focus of the entire programme.

“Our approach to entrepreneurship right across LUMS is based on a rich understanding of small businesses, having developed programmes dedicated to fostering growth and innovation within SMEs over the last 20 years. Our connections to industry, as well as a practice-based approach to teaching supported by strong theoretical roots, allows our students to gain a true understanding of the challenges of being entrepreneurial within the context of start-ups, as well as being able to identify and realise opportunities for growth within small, medium or large organisations.”

LUMS also has more than 50 Entrepreneurs in Residence – a volunteer programme that sees entrepreneurs dedicate at least one week every year to Lancaster students. This powerful network means at least one Entrepreneur in Residence is in the Management School each day of the academic year. These entrepreneurs form an important part of the LUMS community, support group teaching activities, offer one-to-one meetings and mentoring, and use their real world experience to bring the latest academic theory to life.

Lancaster University Management School is quadruple accredited by the AACSB, EQUIS, the Association of MBAs and the Small Business charter.

Lancaster University is the Times and Sunday Times University of the Year 2018 and is in the top ten in all major national league tables. The University also holds a TEF Gold award for outstanding teaching, an outstanding learning environment and delivering excellent employment outcomes for its students. This is the highest possible rating a university can achieve.
