North West Crucible 2026

The 2026 North West Crucible Programme is now open for applications

Overview

The Crucible Programme brings together early- and mid‑career researchers from North West universities (Cumbria, Lancashire, Lancaster, Manchester Metropolitan and Salford) to develop interdisciplinary skills, build cross‑institutional networks, and generate innovative research ideas. 21 researchers will be selected in total to participate across three themed labs, with Lancaster being allocated two places.

What the Programme Offers

  • Time and space to reflect on research and explore new interdisciplinary approaches
  • Opportunities to build lasting collaborations across institutions
  • Access to expert speakers and enhanced professional visibility
  • Opportunity to apply for pump‑priming funding to develop new research ideas, leading to an application for larger-scale, external funding

Format

The programme is delivered across three labs over four months:

  • Lab 1 (Residential): 6–7 May 2026
  • Lab 2 (Residential): 2–3 June 2026
  • Lab 3 (University of Salford): 8 July 2026

Attendance at all labs is required.

Activities include talks, facilitated sessions, creative workshops, and dedicated collaboration time.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be an early- to mid-career researcher
  • Have not yet led a major grant as Principal Investigator
  • Be employed at their host university until July 2027
  • Be available for all three labs

Suitable for academics from any discipline who are open to interdisciplinary thinking and collaboration.

Costs Covered

  • Accommodation, meals, and refreshments for residential labs (held at Wood Hall Hotel and Spa, Wetherby)
  • Travel arranged through home institutions
