Join Dr John Griffin, Senior Lecturer in Materials Chemistry. We spend a lot of our time in Chemistry learning about chemical structures - but how do we actually know these other than trusting what a textbook tells us?
Over the years Chemists have developed a number of tools that enable us to “zoom in” to study individual atoms and molecules in materials. Using these we can see e.g. how the molecules in a pharmaceutical tablet are arranged, or how lithium ions move inside a battery. In this talk I will introduce some of the tools that we use in modern chemistry research and explain how they can be used to help us understand the chemical structures of interesting and important materials.
This is a short 30 – 40 minute lecture. A Q&A with John will take place after the lecture.
