Opportunities and experiences at Lancaster

From engaging with industry through his course to joining a variety of student societies, Tai has has lots of enjoyable opportunities to develop and try new things at Lancaster.

A well-rounded experience

I have enjoyed lots of the opportunities the University has offered for me to grow within and outside of my department. From entering department competitions and gaining internships through my faculty to competing around the UK with student societies and partaking in the ‘Roses’ sports tournament. I have had a well-rounded experience at Lancaster University.

I found the environment at Lancaster University very friendly and that allowed me to open up and explore all my interests from design to photography to advocating for mental health awareness and support.

What I like most about my course is that it exposes us to different fields in design. For instance, we touch upon 3D modelling and industrial design where we get to use the 3D printers and Laser Cutters in the Lab and in other modules we learn about interfaces and UI design. It’s a very diverse course.

My time at Lancaster has prepared me in more ways than I can say but I must mention that my degree has used a variety of learning methods such as consultancy projects with actual businesses, industry guest lectures and practical briefs to give us a rich experience and exposure to the world outside of university. It has prepared me for the level and quality of work that future employers expect in my field of design.

At the end of first year there was an open competition within the faculty to help design the user interface for the iLancaster App. I won and I was able to spend time helping Lancaster University's Information Systems Services team design some of the app. Outside of my faculty, I became a Digital Content Ambassador for the University, which mean I was able to partake in videos, live streams and Instagram take-overs to talk about my university experience and give a glimpse of what uni life is like for a student.

I was also part of the exec for the Hip Hop and Breakdance Society. Being the Publicity Officer and essentially acting as the face of the society came with a lot of responsibility, such as having to keep schedules up to date, publishing announcements on time and engaging in networking to grow the society. It’s a great way to grow skills that could become very useful after university in the working world. I’m sure if you look up ‘LUDans Street’ or ‘Lancaster University Hip Hop Society’ (for the year 2019) on YouTube you’ll see me smashing choreography and you’d never guess that I’d never danced a day in my life before coming to university. Okay that’s an exaggeration, I danced in the shower, but you get me.

I mentioned a lot about dancing, but I was also part of Lancaster University Photo Society in my first year and that experience helped me to hone my photography skills, which has encouraged me to go out there and explore the beauty of Lancaster. So much so that I won a Photo of the Year competition and I’ve been able to document and share some of my experiences at Lancaster University through blog posts and videos.
