Preparing for your postgraduate studies at Lancaster

If you are applying for a postgraduate programme at Lancaster and you have taken an approved English language test, but you have not met the minimum entry requirement for your chosen course, we have a range of pre-sessional English language courses.

Course content

The courses are designed to help you bridge the gap between your current English language score and the normal minimum entry requirement of your degree programme ie IELTS 6.5 or 7.0. They are also intended to develop your study skills and help you get used to studying at Lancaster, which should help you to be more successful in your academic programme. The courses are between 4 and 40 weeks in length, depending on the level of your English when you apply.

Why consider doing our courses?

  • You do not have to retake IELTS at the end of the programme
  • You can get settled in and make friends before you begin your academic course
  • Live on-campus with access to all the university facilities
  • Lively interactive classes in a hi-tech teaching environment

Progression to Courses

  • Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences
  • Faculty of Science & Technology
  • Faculty of Health & Medicine

What is your IELTS Score?

To find out which course you need to take click on your current IELTS score below. If you haven't taken IELTS we also accept other English language tests, email us to find out which course you need to take.

Please note that some degree courses ask for a higher requirement in the individual skills, such as reading and writing. Therefore which Pre-sessional Course you will be recommended for will depend on your particular degree requirements. In addition most departments are willing to offer the Pre-sessional Course, but a few will not.

If you are unsure if a course would be suitable for you or which departments offer these courses please email us.

Alternatively, if you have already met your English language requirement, you may want to consider attending our Study Start course.
