Lancaster University celebrates 14th Green Flag Award

Lancaster University Grounds Maintenance team with their Green Flag award

The ‘Green Flag Award’ is a quality mark for the management of parks and green spaces across the UK and around the world. This 14th award for the University recognises the skill and dedication of the team that makes the Lancaster campus a great place that everyone can enjoy.

This year, the University’s Grounds Team has made ongoing improvements in biodiversity across campus. They have planted 600 British native trees to form new woodland and hedgerows, and developed areas of grassland into wildflower meadow, helping to provide opportunities for nature recovery.

The team has been supported with this effort by the University community, including fortnightly conservation sessions with LUSU Green (formerly known as Green Lancaster) and contributions from members of staff.

Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd MBE, said: “Congratulations to everyone involved at Lancaster University, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that it achieves the high standards required for the Green Flag Award.”

Lancaster’s Landscape Manager Ian Sturzaker said: “It’s fantastic to be again accredited with the international Green Flag Award for the 14th consecutive year. This award highlights the fantastic standards that the team work to and supports our commitment to improving campus biodiversity.”
