Our commitment to sustainability relies upon a strong, collaborative network of staff for the achievement of our 2035 Net Zero carbon targets. Alongside our dedicated Sustainability Team below, we work with a wide network of people from across the university to collate, implement and publicise our broader sustainability work that goes beyond carbon.

“Environmental Sustainability has been at the heart of Lancaster University since its foundation with a mission to tackle global environmental challenges both through our teaching and research and our own campus and operations. We're proud that we are now the largest producer of renewable energy of all UK Universities (according to HESA) and are now focused on meeting the challenges of the climate emergency.”

Sustainability governance
accordion
The purpose of the Steering Group is to provide a cross-cutting forum for the discussion, review, and approval of operational matters related to sustainability.
The group meets every six weeks and reports to the Sustainability Board.
Membership of the group comprises nominated representatives from each faculty and department. Each faculty now has a sustainability group that feeds into the Steering Group, informing colleagues on ideas and progress to improve sustainability performance at a faculty level.
The purpose of the Sustainability Board is to ensure accountability for the delivery of the University's sustainability commitments, to receive updates from and provide guidance to the Steering group, and to report on progress to the University's Executive Board and Council.
Membership of the group is made up of senior staff from each faculty and department and is chaired by the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Global, Digital and Sustainability). Lancaster University Students Union (LUSU) is also represented on the board as a representative of students.
