Investing in a sustainable future

The University has invested more than £220 million in development projects since 2013 to build a campus that can support world-class teaching and research. Since the University declared a climate emergency in 2020, the capital development programme has been reshaped to dramatically reduce the impact that new-build developments have on the environment. As the University continues to grow, we are being smarter with space - repurposing existing spaces and adapting the way we work for the good of the planet.

Our Estate Strategy

Drawing on learning following the impact of the pandemic, the changes in the way we now work, the Estate Strategy presents new sustainable space options and seeks to accommodate our demographic growth forecasts against our carbon reduction targets by maximising opportunities to recycle and repurpose our existing space.

Lancaster leaps closer to Net Zero with two major renewable projects

In May 2024 the University announced the appointment of a local contractor Vital Energi at a ‘groundbreaking’ event at the site of its new solar farm, marking the start of the first of two innovative projects that will strengthen Lancaster’s position as a global leader in sustainability.  Read the news article.

Management School East Estate Redevelopment Project

A project to develop the Management School East Estate into a revamped facility for the students, staff, and businesses of tomorrow started in July 2024 and is due to complete in February 2026.

Alexandra Park Drive.

Road closure for resurfacing works to campus roads

On Saturday 26 July, Alexandra Park Drive will be closed to all vehicles from the bottom of the hill to the top of the hill from 7.30am - 6pm to enable large sections of the road to be resurfaced. Access to main campus will be available from Bigforth Drive.

Bowland Avenue pavement improvements

From Monday 21 July to Friday 12 September 2025 a phased programme of improvement works will be undertaken to widen and replace the tarmac footpaths around the Chaplaincy.

South Spine closure as part of Management School East Estate Redevelopment Project

On Monday 30 June access along the South Spine outside the Management School will be reduced in width while the contractor removes the current hoarding and the Spine to be repaved as part of the Management School East Estate Redevelopment project. An accessible route will be maintained along this route to reduce the impact on Open Days and Graduation.

Underpass bus station closure and relocation of bus services to Bowland Avenue

From Monday 4 August until Sunday 7 September the Underpass bus station will be closed to enable the installation of new gas pipework exiting the Energy Centre to the north, routed through the Underpass and connecting to the north and south underground spine ducts.

Sport Lancaster 3G pitch improvements

From Monday 16 June to Thursday 31 July work will take place to upgrade the Sport Lancaster 3G pitch facilities. The improvements will ensure the pitch continues to meet the specifications required for World Rugby and FIFA accreditation.
