CAS and student visa advice for applicants

Most of our international applicants require a Student visa to come and study with us in Lancaster.

If you already have a Student visa from previous study in the UK, you will need a new visa specific to your course at Lancaster University.

You can find out if you need a Student visa and how to apply, by visiting the UK government website on Student visas.

To apply for your Student visa you will need a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies).

What is a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)?

A CAS is a virtual document that includes details of your studies. We will send this directly to UK Visas and Immigration. When we issue the CAS, we will send you a reference number by email and it is this number that you need for your Student visa application.

When can I get my CAS?

The earliest a CAS can be issued is six months before the start of your course. We will only issue a CAS when you have met all the conditions of your offer, and you have accepted your place. If you are an undergraduate applicant applying through UCAS, you must have placed Lancaster as your firm choice.

What do I need to do to get my CAS?

In order to issue your CAS, there are a number of checks that we must complete. We will have some of the information we need already, but there may be other information that we will ask you to supply.

The following is a list of the information and evidence that we will need to complete our checks:

  1. Confirmation that a CAS is required. If we have not been in contact with you recently, we will ask you to confirm that you still intend to study with us, and that you do require a CAS.
  2. Passport. We will need a copy of your passport photo page. The details of your passport (name, date of birth, nationality and country of birth) should match the details on your application record. If any of the details are different, these will need to be updated on your application record. If you are an undergraduate applicant, please contact UCAS to change the details. If you are a postgraduate applicant, please email our Admissions Office pgadmissions@lancaster.ac.uk or telephone us on +44 (0)1524 592032.

Your passport should be valid for a month after that start of your course. It does not need to be valid for the full duration of your course. If you renew your passport at any time, please inform us. If you renew your passport once we have started the CAS process, this could cause delays. If your passport is valid for at least a month after the start of your course, we recommend that you do not renew your passport until after you have arrived in the UK.

  3. Academic and English language information. We will check that we have all the necessary documents confirming your official academic results, and that you have met our English language requirements. In most cases, we will have these already but we will let you know if there is any further information that we need.

  4. Previous study in the UK. Before we can issue a CAS, we will need to consider if you have previously studied in the UK, or if you are currently studying in the UK. You should have given this information on your original application to study with us, but we may ask you to reconfirm this.

If you have studied in the UK previously, or you are currently studying in the UK
We will ask you for a copy of any Student visas or Tier 4 visas that you have been issued. This should include any Sharecodes and entry stamps / proof of travel. If you have studied in the UK under a different visa (other than Tier 4 or Student), you should let us know, and also provide us with a copy of the relevant visa. If there are any periods of study that we did not know about, then we will need to consider whether we are able to issue a CAS.

If you have previously studied a course at the same level in the UK, we will need to ensure we have all the information that is needed before issuing a CAS. In most cases, we will have already asked for this information as part of your application, but we will let you know if there is any further information that we need.

If you have not studied in the UK previously, we will ask you to confirm this.

  5. Applicants under the age of 18. The University has additional responsibilities to students who are under the age of 18 when they register. If you will be under 18 years old, we will contact you to request that you and your parent or guardian complete and return a consent form, and submit proof of the relationship. We will need to have received and confirmed all the necessary authorisation before we issue a CAS. Please see our Policy for the Admissions of Students Under the Age of 18 for full details.

  6. Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS). If required, you must apply for an ATAS certificate before we can issue you with a CAS. We will have confirmed whether ATAS may be needed at the point of offer. Further information about Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS). We will need confirmation that you have received your ATAS certificate before we can issue you with a CAS.

  7. TB test. Some applicants will need to have a tuberculosis (TB) test in order to apply for their Student visa. If you require a TB test, we will ask you to send us a copy of your valid TB Clearance Certificate. You can check if you need a TB test, and find more detailed information on the UKVI website. This page also includes a list of relevant countries. If you do not need a TB test, we will ask you to confirm this.

  8. Evidence of Finances. In some cases, we may ask you to prove that you have enough money to pay the course fees for your current academic year and your maintenance requirements. See below for further information. If we have asked you to pay a deposit, you will need to pay this before we can issue a CAS.

  9. Once we have completed all the above checks, we may ask you to attend an online interview.

Once we are happy that we have completed all the necessary checks, we will issue your CAS. We will send you the details, along with your reference number, by email.

Evidence of Finances

When you apply for your Student visa, you may need to prove that you have enough money to fund your course and support yourself. This is the financial part of the visa application and contributes 10 points of the required 70 points.

We may ask applicants to supply this evidence before we will issue a CAS.

You will need to show you have enough money to pay the course fees for your current academic year and your maintenance requirements. Please note that you must have had enough money in your account for 28 days in a row. The 28 days is calculated by counting back from the date of the closing balance on the most recent evidence you provide.

When is financial evidence not required as part of your visa application?

Some Student visa applicants do not need to provide evidence of their finances when they are applying for entry clearance in their country of nationality or ordinary residence, or for leave to remain in the UK. The Home Office calls this the 'differential evidence requirement'. You can check if you do not need to prove you have the money to support yourself on the UK Government’s website.

If you qualify to apply under the differential evidence arrangement, you are not required to include the evidence finances and qualifications with your application.

However, you might be asked to provide this evidence before you get a decision on your application.

If you do need to provide it, you’ll be contacted by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) after you’ve submitted your visa application.

How can I prepare?

We recommend you prepare evidence of your finances, unless you have been living in the UK with permission (of any visa type) for 12 months or more on the date you apply for the visa and are making your visa application in the UK.

Your visa application will be refused if you do not provide the necessary documents, in the time stated, if requested by UKVI.

If you do submit documents when they are not required, they will be assessed anyway. If they do not meet UKVI requirements, your visa application will be refused.

If you make a new visa application in the UK and you have been living in the UK with immigration permission (of any type) for 12 months or more on the date you apply, you will not need to meet the financial requirement. If you have not been living in the UK for 12 months or more, or are applying overseas, please read the following information carefully.

Further details about the money you need for your Student visa  can be found on UK government’s webpage. Please read this information carefully to ensure you are fully aware of the requirements.
