11.15am - Zoology taster session and demonstrations

TimeSession
11.15am Live taster lecture
  • Of rats and reefs, with Professor Nick Graham
When rats are absent, abundant seabirds despot huge quantities of nutrients onto tropical islands, which in turn leach onto coral reefs enhancing fish and coral growth, and promoting healthy ecosystem functioning. Nick will discuss some of these relationships in a taster lecture.
11.30am Demonstrations
  • The global importance of tropical ecosystems, with Professor Jos Barlow
This demonstration highlights the importance of studying tropical ecology, even when situated at 54 degrees in latitude. We will examine how much of the world’s biodiversity is in the tropics, how well we know tropical species, and how threatened they are by human actions.
  • Supporting the conservation of the UK’s endangered butterflies, with Dr Andy Wilby
This demonstration shows how research by students at Lancaster Environment Centre, in collaboration with butterfly conservation, is helping to conserve the pearl-bordered fritillary, one of the UK’s most rapidly declining butterfly species.

This is your chance to ask any questions you may have to staff or current students.
