Driving Innovation at Lancaster University: Formula Student Project

Racing car team

The Lancaster University Formula Student Team is a highly motivated group of MEng students undertaking an ambitious and technically demanding project as part of their Master’s Dissertation. Their goal is to rebuild, refine, and deliver a competitive electric Formula Student race car, applying advanced engineering principles in a real-world motorsport environment.

Building upon the framework and foundations left by the previous team, the current students are working relentlessly to bring the car back to life. This process involves extensive redesign, analysis, manufacturing, testing, and problem-solving across multiple engineering disciplines. From electrical systems and powertrain integration to vehicle dynamics and reliability, every aspect of the car is being carefully reviewed and improved. The commitment shown by the team extends far beyond academic requirements, with long hours spent balancing demanding coursework alongside the pressures of delivering a fully functioning race car.

As an electric vehicle, the project strongly reflects the future direction of the automotive and motorsport industries. Sustainability is at the heart of the team’s work, with the car showcasing clean propulsion, energy efficiency, and forward-thinking engineering solutions. Through this project, students are gaining valuable experience in electric vehicle technology, preparing them for careers in an industry that is rapidly evolving towards greener and more sustainable solutions.

The Formula Student project also provides an exceptional platform for professional development. Team members gain hands-on experience in teamwork, leadership, budgeting, sponsorship management, and communication—skills that are highly valued by employers. At the same time, sponsors gain exposure through association with a prestigious university project driven by innovation, sustainability, and student excellence.

To continue progressing and reach the full potential of the car, the team is actively seeking support from sponsors and industry partners. Contributions—whether financial, technical, or advisory—will directly support the development of the vehicle and the students behind it.
