This discussion panel will identify challenges and barriers to the recruitment and career development of minority groups in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and share good practises to overcome these barriers and challenges.

The Faculty of Science and Technology Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (the FST EDI) is facilitating a panel discussion on “Diversifying academia: approaches that work”.

This discussion panel will identify challenges and barriers to the recruitment and career development of minority groups in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and share good practises to overcome these barriers and challenges.

Moderator: Prof Peter Atkinson, FST Dean

Panellists:

Dr Chris Arridge is a Reader in physics and a leader in accessibility in STEM and the academic environment. His is a co-chair of the Lancaster University Disabled Employee Network (DEN+).

Dr Sheila Kanani MBE is the Education, Outreach and Diversity Officer at the Royal Astronomical Society. She is leading efforts to bring physics and astronomy to underrepresented communities and, recently ran a study into harassment and bullying in the space sector.

Dr Andrea Popp is a Postdoctoral Fellow in geoscience and an active member of the European Geophysics Union EDI working group. She has organised several workshops on EDI issues and published articles on aspects of EDI including gender inequality, bullying and racism in geosciences, earth and space sciences.

Prof Gwyneth Stallard OBE is a Professor of mathematics and Deputy Head of the School. She has a long-standing interest in addressing the issues affecting women in mathematics and chaired the London Mathematical Society's Women in Mathematics Committee from 2006 to 2015.

Dr Anastasia Ushakova is a Lecturer in biostatistics in the Faculty of Health and Medicine. She is a member of the Lancaster University Women’s Network leadership team, working towards supporting women and other minorities in Lancaster University and academic spaces.
