Programme of works
The Net Zero Energy Project includes three elements of work. Further details, including current and upcoming works and how they may affect you, can be found below.
November 2024 - Early 2027: Construction of a new energy centre on the outer edge of south east campus.
District Heat Network
November 2024 - December 2025: Expansion of the District Heat Network.
Building Connections
June 2025 - November 2026: Connecting buildings to the expanded District Heat Network, which will be fed by the new Energy Centre 2. This work will involve fixing district heating pipework to the facade of buildings and bringing the pipework into plant rooms and kitchens. Internal upgrades will also take place, including the replacement of existing gas boilers with new, more efficient systems.
North Campus

Until early June 2026, the Net Zero Energy Project contractor, Vital Energi, will be working on the replacement of the existing boilers with a district heating pipework connection from the Bowland Main plant room into the Welcome Centre rooftop plant room.
Work will progress between 8am – 5pm (Monday to Friday) and will be noisy at times. The project webpages list alternative study spaces if required.

The Net Zero Energy Project contractor, Vital Energi, will be working on the connection of the Fylde College residential buildings to the campus District Heat Network. This will involve internal and external works at the following houses.

How will this work affect you?
Vital Energi contractors will be using the communal stairwells to access plant rooms on the top floor of the houses but won’t need access to any student flats.

From Thursday 18 June to late August 2026, the Net Zero Energy Project contractor, Vital Energi, will be working on the replacement of the boilers and new pipework connections in the InfoLab21 plant room.
Vital Energi contractors will be accessing the plant room externally and won’t require internal access to the building.
Work will take place between 8am – 6pm (Monday to Friday) and will be noisy at times. The project webpages list alternative study spaces if required.

From Monday 30 March to June 2026, the Net Zero Energy Project contractor, Vital Energi, will be installing new pipework on the north side of Energy Centre One to enable new district heating connections into the building.

How will this affect you?

Scaffolding is in place to allow Vital Energi contractors to access plant rooms. They won't need access to any student flats.
Some pedestrian access routes in the local area are closed. Diversion signage is in place and building entrances will be maintained at all times.

A one-way system is in place northbound along South Drive from the LENS building up to George Fox Avenue to enable the contractor to construct the new energy centre. This one-way system will be in place until the project completes in Spring 2027.
A new entrance has been created from George Fox Avenue into George Fox car park and a contractor's compound has been created on the east side of the main car park. The west side of George Fox car park will remain in use for staff parking using the new entrance/exit from George Fox Avenue.

From 7 April until early May 2026, the Net Zero Energy Project contractor, Vital Energi, will be working on the connection of the external district heating pipework to Graduate College - Cartmel family flats and houses. Vital Energi contractors will be installing external pipework only at this time, in readiness for summer internal connections.
