Our students: Katie's love of learning

I didn’t really choose Lancaster, it chose me. From the second I stepped onto the campus for the first time, I knew I’d found my home for the next 3 years. It just felt right. The campus is so inviting, and the people are so friendly, it just feels like home.

The diversity of modules taught throughout my Biomedicine degree have reignited my love for learning. It has allowed me to discover my enjoyment for topics such as genetics and follow that enjoyment from first year all the way to third year. I’ve felt so well supported by my lecturers and advisors alike that I’ve really been able to reach my full potential here.

Our alumni: A springboard to a successful career in the NHS

My career has been one of rapid progression and continuous learning.

Graduating with an BSc in Biomedical Sciences and MSc Biomedicine (in 2021 from Lancaster), I started as a Medical Laboratory Assistant in Clinical Biochemistry at NHS Blackpool in early 2022. This early experience provided me with a strong foundation in laboratory practice. I was allowed to complete the IBMS registration portfolio and, buiding on this, I secured a place on the competitive Scientist Training Programme (STP) in the same laboratory as a trainee clinical scientist in September 2024.

I absolutely feel that studying both my BSc and MSc at Lancaster specifically benefited my career progression. The courses’ rigorous curriculum provided a strong theoretical foundation, which was essential for understanding the complexities of laboratory diagnostics. The courses also emphasised critical thinking and data analysis, which has honed my ability to interpret complex scientific information, a skill directly applicable to both the IBMS portfolio and the STP. Furthermore, the hands-on experience I gained in the practical lab sessions translated directly to the skills needed in a clinical setting, allowing me to quickly adapt and contribute effectively.

The course structure, the learning environment, and the support from the faculty fostered a proactive approach to learning, which ultimately helped me pursue and achieve my goals in my professional career, including gaining HCPC registration and securing a place on the STP programme.
