A Royal Television Society award-winning broadcaster, who has built a career telling stories for some of the UK’s leading channels, has received a Lancaster University Alumni Award.

Warren Nettleford, who graduated in History and Politics in 2003, has worked for the BBC, Channel 4, 5 News and for ITV News.

Working across news and documentaries, Warren, a presenter and reporter for ITN since 2014, has covered major stories in the UK and around the world including several general elections in the UK, as well as US Presidential elections.

He has built a reputation for calm, intelligent interviewing and a strong instinct for human connection.

A former President of Lancaster’s Student Union, Warren, who was in County College, has retained a close connection to the University, participating in many mentoring and careers events for students.

And while his accent doesn’t give him away, he’s proudly from Dudley in the West Midlands.

In his award acceptance speech Warren recalled a mix of stories from his Lancaster University days that, he said, had shaped who he is today.

The decision to be open, to accept an invitation, to listen to what someone said, to question why something always had to be the way it is, were threads that ‘ran through the tapestry of his Lancaster experience’.

It was, he added, at Lancaster where his natural curiosity was nurtured further and he was able to ‘stretch and flex his intellectual muscles’, where his desire to learn more things deeply found a home, where tutors encouraged him to be better and where he learned the importance of bouncing back from a mistake.

“You now have one of the best universities in the country on your CV,” he told graduating students. “Congratulations. You should be proud. Lancaster is proud of you I can guarantee.”

Warren received his alumni award, given ‘in recognition of outstanding achievements in broadcasting and his continuing support for Lancaster University students’, from the University’s Chancellor, Alan Milburn.
