Can you outline your research interests?

My research interest is AI and natural language processing (NLP). NLP has traditionally been used for written language processing, less so for speech, image and video processing. AI can now expand the use of NLP to these areas. However, it does less well in languages other than English and struggles when accents are strong. My research is looking at how this can be improved, applying this to use by call handlers and responders in emergency situations.

What benefits did the scheme provide?

I was on the bridging scheme for 3 months, during which time I was able to make good progress on putting together a grant application for EPSRC funding. This included building networks and bringing in collaborators from other higher education institutions, the NHS and interpretation providers. A small amount of catalyst funding allowed the setting up of a workshop helping to build up the relationships and share the vision of the project.

In addition, the bridging scheme gave me the time to apply for funding from the Friend of Lancaster in America. This was successful and covered the organisation and delivery of a workshop on AI in Nigeria.

What contributions were you able to make to researhc culture during the bridging period?

I led on putting together a 3-day summer school within my department themed on natural language processing, large language models and the responsible and inclusive use of AI. This included keynote speakers from other institutions and Microsoft Africa. (Link to flyer if possible)

And into the future?

I’m hoping to submit the EPSRC funding proposal shortly. The 3-month bridging period also allowed me to identify a couple of short-term research projects that will extend my contract further. Whilst my employment status is still precarious, I’m hoping that the activity that the bridging period has supported will lead to more long-term opportunities.
