Reimagining Research Practices

Towards a Sustainable, Ethical and Inclusive Future

Reimagining Research Practices

About the Project

The Reimagining Research Practices project is a groundbreaking 2-year initiative funded by the Wellcome Trust, bringing together researchers from multiple disciplines, professional services staff, education fellows and software developers. The project explores how research practices can be strengthened to foster healthier research culture; concentrating on three interconnected pillars: sustainability, ethics and inclusion.

  • Sustainability

Research is key to addressing the climate and biodiversity crisis. At the same time, performing research can be resource intensive. How can we continue to evolve our research practices and ensure they are sustainable? How can we, as a research community, ensure we are considering and accounting for sustainability?

  • Ethics

Performing research can be ethically complex and involves navigating multiple inter-related issues and associated risks. What are good practices to mitigate for ethical risks arising from evolving research approaches? How can ethical issues be engaged with and addressed beyond filling in approval forms?

  • Inclusion

Research has the potential to benefit and improve the wider community. It can also be somewhat insular, and inaccessible for marginalised and disadvantaged communities. How can we enhance our own practices to be genuinely inclusive and work in a more collaborative manner?

Latest Updates

  • Sustainability in Research Forum - March 2026, 10am to 3pm

You are invited to join our speakers from FST, FHM, LUMS and FHASS for an interdisciplinary forum on Sustainability in Research Across Lancaster University. This event will be hosted by Dr Seth Robinson. We will have lightning talks, a panel to discuss how researchers are engaging across the university, and an unconference style session where researchers have a chance to connect with colleagues across departments to discuss funding opportunities and grant ideas.

  • Sustainable Research Practice Training

The Reimagining Research Practices team have launched a course providing an introduction to sustainable research practice. The training is available online via Lancaster University's open learning platform. Supporting materials are also available for those wishing to run the training in person.

  • Reimagining Research Practices Podcast

Emerging from discussions as part of the project, Dr Dan Craddock has produced a podcast, which unpacks a variety of conundrums relating to ethical tensions in research. Every week a new guest reflects on a different conundrum, discussed informally over a cuppa, from AI in research to climate action, sustainability and citizen science.
