The Sunway and Lancaster experience

I studied Psychology as my undergraduate degree at Sunway University from 2021 to 2024, and I continued my education at Lancaster University, studying Psychological Research Methods as my masters in 2025/26.

The Sunway-Lancaster partnership was important, not only because I was able to receive a UK degree whilst studying in Malaysia, but because it also served to make my learning experience more holistic. Lancaster's curriculum helped me develop crucial technical skills for psychological research while Sunway's emphasis on hands-on experiences helped me gain an edge in practical work. I would say that I chose Sunway not only because of the appeal of receiving a UK education from home, but also because of its opportunities for global mobility. I've definitely enjoyed studying both degree’s because of all the wonderful experiences I've had across both campuses.

I chose Lancaster University for my master’s because of its strong foundation in psychological research. As someone who aspires to further my career as a researcher, Lancaster University was a solid choice to further my studies. The Sunway-Lancaster partnership definitely played a role in my choice because I was able to settle in really quickly. This was thanks to my previous experience with the Study Exchange Programme and the research skills I've gained from my bachelor's. The thing I have enjoyed the most at Lancaster University is making connections throughout my time studying here.

Transitioning to Lancaster life

The Global Experiences team were very helpful when I was preparing to transition to Lancaster University.

"The staff were approachable and they definitely helped dispel my doubts before flying to the UK."

Also, the pre-departure briefing organised by the Lancaster University Malaysian Student Society was really informative as they provided a lot of information about the student life at Lancaster and gave advice on what items I should bring to Lancaster.

The main lessons I've learned from studying at both Lancaster and Sunway would be that it is always worth trying new experiences, even if they may seem scary at first. I had my doubts about whether I would be able to overcome the cultural and curricular differences between the two universities, but stepping out of that comfort zone helped me grow so much as an individual. As for the future, I am in the process of applying for PhD programmes, and with some luck, I do hope that I can return to academia as a lecturer!
