Motivation behind the application

My motivation for applying to Lancaster University was due to its postgraduate programme in cyber security. It’s been a target that I have had my eye on since my second year in my undergraduate studies with Sunway University. More than that, it was also an opportunity for me to learn from industry experts who have valuable experience in the world of cyber security.

Academic Experience and Learning Environment

My postgraduate academic experience at Lancaster University throughout this year has been nothing short of insightful and exciting, to say the least. Whether in a lecture or practical session, the feedback and discussions that were had in these sessions were valuable additions to my ever-growing skillset of cyber security. This, coupled with the enthusiastic and supportive energy of my fellow classmates made the learning environment all the better with their own extensive knowledge of the particular modules that we studied.

Shaping potential career plans

The opportunity to study at Lancaster University has had a significant impact on shaping my future career plans. The programme’s strong emphasis on both the technical and theoretical aspects of cyber security has sparked my interest in certain areas of cyber security, such as secure software development and threat intelligence.

In addition, the chance to have discussions with experienced lecturers and attend guest talks from industry professionals has inspired me to consider long-term goals in cyber policy or research.

Advice to prospective students

I would encourage students thinking of coming to Lancaster to say ‘yes’ to new things because something out of your comfort zone is always worth doing, even if it means going for a little try first. There will be setbacks, but it is just a matter of time before you will be ahead of the competition. Foster as many connections as you can as you learn skills from others. What’s better is that this goes both ways!
