English Language Requirements

I need to apply for a student visa to study in the UK.

If you require a visa to study in the UK and you have not taken an English language test yet, we recommend that you book a place at one of the UKVI approved testing centres.

Please note - if you do not meet the English requirement for direct entry into your degree, you will need to book an IELTS Academic test at an UKVI approved test centre before you can start a pre-sessional programme AND you must declare it is to be used for visa immigration purposes.

For direct entry onto a postgraduate or undergraduate degree at Lancaster University we will accept a number of English language tests providing you meet the minimum entry requirement for your programme:

*Note 1: For some Undergraduate programmes, the requirements will be different:

  • Some Science and Engineering courses require a minimum of IELTS 6.0 or Pearson PTE Academic 55.
  • Specific requirements for Medicine A100 - a minimum of IELTS (Academic, at least 7.0 in each component) or the Pearson PTE Academic qualification (at least 70 in each component) before applying.

***Note 3: IELTS certificates are valid for 24 months. Your IELTS certificate will need to be less than 24 months old on the start date of your study at Lancaster.
