What is the visa brake?

The UK Government has introduced a temporary measure that automatically refuses certain visa applications made from outside the UK, based on the applicant’s nationality. This is known as a visa brake. We understand that this will be frustrating, and we want to provide you with relevant information to help you understand the situation.

As of 26 March 2026, the UK are now refusing all new Student visa applications made outside the UK by nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, or Sudan.

Who is not affected by the visa brake?

  • Applicants who applied for their visa before 26 March 2026
  • Students already in the UK applying to extend their visa
  • If you hold dual nationality, you will not be impacted by the visa brake if you apply using a nationality that is not on the affected list. You must still accurately declare all nationalities you hold.

The UK Government has stated that the measure is temporary and will be regularly reviewed, with an initial expected duration of around 18 months.

What this means for you

  • If you are a national of an affected country, and would be applying for your Student visa from outside the UK, please do not submit a new Student visa application at this time, as it will be refused
  • If you already hold an offer, your place at the University may be deferred to a later intake
  • If you are currently studying in the UK on a Student visa, your visa remains valid

We encourage applicants to refer to the UK Government's guidance page.
