The University has achieved the international benchmark for its outdoor spaces for the 15th year in a row and is officially recognised as one of the country’s best-managed green spaces.

The ‘Green Flag Award’ is a quality mark for the management of parks and green spaces across the UK and around the world. This 15th award for the University recognises the skill and dedication of the team that makes the Lancaster campus a great place that everyone can enjoy.

This year, the University’s Grounds Team has made significant improvements in biodiversity across campus, enhancing not only the local environment but also the everyday experience of students who rely on green spaces for relaxation, connection, and wellbeing. The team has planted approximately 10,000 trees to form new woodland and hedgerows, creating richer habitats and peaceful natural areas that students can enjoy between lectures. They have also developed and improved the biodiversity of 1.88Ha of grassland – the equivalent size of 2.6 football pitches – transforming these spaces into vibrant, restorative landscapes that support both wildlife and the mental health of those who spend time in them.

The team has been supported with this effort by the University community, including conservation sessions with LUSU Green, Lancaster University Pre-School Centre and contributions from members of staff.

Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd MBE, said: “As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like this that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard. Congratulations to everyone involved."

Lancaster’s Landscape Manager Ian Sturzaker said: “Achieving Green Flag Award status for the 15th consecutive year in a row is a fantastic accomplishment and one we are incredibly proud of. The award recognises the passion and expertise of the team in caring for our campus landscape, while also highlighting the important role our green spaces play in supporting biodiversity and helping the University deliver its sustainability ambitions.”
