The best student discounts in Lancaster

by Frank Xue, Graduate College, April 2026

Introduction: budgeting with confidence

Hi everyone! I’m Frank, a PhD researcher in Film. Having lived in the UK for over four years. I’ve had plenty of experience managing a student budget.

Moving to a new city can feel like a financial challenge, especially for those moving to the UK for the first time. However, Lancaster is remarkably affordable if you know how to use the available discounts. In this article, I’ll walk you through the best student offers in the city to help your money go further while you focus on enjoying student life.

1. National student discount schemes

The first thing every student should do is sign up for UNiDAYS and Student Beans. These are free digital platforms that provide instant access to discounts at hundreds of major brands.

Whether you need a new laptop for your research or a warm winter coat, these apps are essential. I personally used UNiDAYS to get a significant discount on my MacBook when I started my PhD, which made a huge difference to my initial setup costs. If you prefer a physical card, the TOTUM scheme is also popular and offers a range of exclusive local perks.

2. Food and drink deals around Lancaster

Eating out is one of the best ways to socialise, and Lancaster has fantastic deals for students. Here are some of my verified favourites:

  • Pizza Express: They typically offer a 25% discount on food and drink through UNiDAYS from Sunday to Friday.
  • Greggs: A classic UK experience! With Student Beans (this is only available in the app), you can get a free sausage roll or vegan roll when you purchase a sandwich meal deal.
  • McDonald’s: By using your Student Beans, you can get 1,000 bonus points on your first order
  • KFC: For a quick and affordable bite, use Student Beans to claim a free popcorn snack box whenever you spend £5 or more. It’s perfect for a post-library refuel!
  • Domino’s Pizza: This is a classic for flat movie nights. Through Student Beans, you can Buy One Get One Free (2 for 1) on all small, medium, and large pizzas. It’s easily one of the best value deals for a group of friends.
  • Starbucks: Using UNiDAYS, you can grab a tall hot drink for just £2 (or an iced version for £2.50) every Tuesday. On any other day, you can still enjoy 20% off selected food and beverages.
  • Toby Carvery (Morecambe): If you fancy a traditional British roast, it’s worth the short bus trip to Morecambe. They offer a generous 33% off mains from Monday to Friday when you present your Student Beans ID.

3. Shopping and essentials

Maintaining your daily routine doesn’t have to be expensive. Major retailers in Lancaster city centre offer consistent student savings:

  • Boots & Superdrug: Both offer a 10% discount when you link your student status to their loyalty cards. It’s perfect for saving on skincare and pharmacy essentials.
  • Waterstones: For academic books or a weekend read, you can get 5% off throughtheir student membership and a loyalty card through their ‘plus’ membership.
  • Apple: Always check the education stores via UNiDAYS before buying hardware; I saved over £100 on my MacBook this way.

4. Travel: exploring for less

Getting around Lancaster and the rest of the UK is much cheaper with the right passes:

  • 16-25 Railcard: This is a non-negotiable for me. It gives you 1/3 off rail travel across the UK. I used mine for all my trips, saving hundreds of pounds over the years. Top tip: you can usually get 15% off the cost of the Railcard itself through UNiDAYS (Trainline).
  • Stagecoach: If you commute between the city centre and campus, the UniRider bus pass is the most cost-effective way to travel. It offers unlimited travel for a fixed term, which is much cheaper than paying daily fares.

5. Entertainment

As a Film student, The Dukes is my absolute favourite spot in the city. They offer a free student membership that is packed with benefits. Once you sign up, you can get cinema tickets for just £5, which is incredible value for an independent cinema.

Beyond the films, the membership allows you to use their Theatre Bar as a study space, where you can enjoy free refills on tea and filter coffee while you work. It’s a fantastic way to escape the library and soak in some local culture while staying productive.

Conclusion: always carry your student card!

There are countless ways to make your money go further in Lancaster while living a fulfilling student life. My biggest piece of advice? Always carry your student card. Many local shops and restaurants offer discounts that they don’t necessarily advertise—if in doubt, just ask!
