Why Lancaster?

In joining Lancaster, you will become a part of our Sports and Exercise Science community in a highly ranked department (14th in the UK for Sports Science, The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027). You will explore the science behind human performance in sports, exercise and health. Using our state-of-the-art equipment, you'll gain the skills to capture and analyse physiological and biomechanical data to better understand human performance and activity - whether that's for competition or disease management.

You will benefit from Lancaster Medical School’s excellent connections with clinicians, practitioners, and professionals working in both the health and sports domains, whilst gaining experience of working with athletes and members of the wider community.

The professional development opportunities that you can apply for come about directly through the relationships between our academics and industry.

Professional

From the outset, our programme is built to prepare you for your professional life post-graduation. You’ll learn all aspects of laboratory health and safety, and risk assessments - essential skills for entry into either a clinical or sports setting. In addition to subject-specific knowledge you'll a broad set of transferable skills, such as teamwork, communication and time management - required for sports and exercise careers but equally applicable elsewhere.

Research with impact

We talk a lot about ‘research-led teaching’ but what does that really mean? It means that the academics you will learn from, the people taking your labs and tutorials and standing at the front of the lecture theatres, are experts in their fields. Their research is shaping our understanding of the world and their work feeds into our degree programmes, ensuring that your education is informed by cutting-edge thinking.

Isaac's professional development opportunity

I had the incredible opportunity attend the OMM (Original Mountain Marathon) with Lancaster University. During the event this year, athletes took on a challenging orienteering course which took place over two days in the Lake District, with the elites covering over 85km throughout the event!

During the weekend, we collected data to investigate the biomechanical and physical effects of an ultramarathon. To do this, we collected pre- and post- race data which included force data, jump height, foot posture index, and measured the appearance of the athlete's feet using research grade equipment. Data from more than 40 participants was successfully collected, providing a valuable dataset that will be part of both academic research and help to inform future product development.

It was an invaluable experience that strengthened my research and data collection skills and gave a unique insight into this type of endurance sport. Additionally, I got the opportunity to model for their new fell shoes which was a cool experience for me!
