Headshot of Dr Alexa Cleasby

Alexa has managed to combine her biochemistry background and passion for writing into a career as a medical writer with the Bioscript Group. She has been promoted a number of times within the company and is now a Scientific Director.

Alexa spent a couple of years as a postdoctoral researcher before moving to her current employer. She stressed the value of the transferable skills gained during research, for example, effective time management and independence has been key to all her roles.

One concern when moving out of academia was no longer being her own ‘boss’. This concern was mostly unfounded as she’s had the autonomy to plan her own time and workload in all her non-academic roles. However, as her work is client based, she does miss the ownership that comes with research projects.

The work-life balance with her current employer is good; there are no expectations of regularly coming into the office. Alexa works 4 days a week all from home, and goes into the Manchester office around once per month. There is scope within Bioscript to amend the start/finish time of her working hours making it possible for Alexa to work around childcare responsibilities, albeit with clients in America she occasionally needs to fit in with their time zones!
