At Acas Calum leads on flexible working, zero-hours contracts and workplace surveillance. Before moving into his current role Calum worked as a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Health Inequalities Research at Lancaster University. He noted that working for an employer can offer greater opportunities for collaboration and team support compared to the more solitary nature of research. However, in contrast he acknowledged that individual contributions can sometimes feel less visible in a large organisation.
When asked what he misses from academia, Calum mentioned the relative freedom to set his own research direction and the absence of frequent meetings, which are a feature of his current role! He highlighted the value of skills gained during research such as in qualitative research, problem-solving, and communication—which have been highly transferable and appreciated in his current position.
On work-life balance and job security, Calum reflected that priorities change over time. He recognised that opportunities for a permanent academic role are rare and personal circumstances needed a pragmatic approach. The Civil Service offered permanent employment and promotes a healthy work-life balance.
Calum feels that moving outside of academia does not have to be a one-way journey; there may be opportunities to return in the future.
