Making friends and campus life

I was in an all-girls school all throughout my education at home, so I think going into a mixed gender school was the biggest cultural shock once I got here. However, it was quite easy to make friends. I was scared about it a lot, but because of the university being so welcoming and having so many events, I don't think it was that hard. It was more about putting myself out there!

Every time I talk about campus, I always say I think is the safest place. When I got here and there was the porters and security, it really helped me settle in better. We're self-contained. I feel very comfortable, even walking around at 2 a.m.

There's a lot to do on campus. My favourite thing is going to the library and then doing absolutely no studying because I keep seeing more people that I know. It feels great - it feels like a community.

On campus, I think there's only like three places that aren't halal. It's nice, the fact that we have so many options to go to. I really love Pizzetta Republic especially! The pizza is just amazing. There's a halal shop that has more like Middle Eastern spices and food and that kind of thing. But confession time: I don't actually cook food from home!

My course and career opportunities

I really love my course. I'm getting what I wanted, which is a great breadth of information from different disciplines.

The careers department does a lot of training for interviews for assessment centre, so I've had a mock assessment before going to my actual assessment centre, just to prepare me. There are so many different ways to further grow your career.

Settling in and finding your community

The actual feeling of it being a home kind of crept up on me. You don't really realise it until it's been a couple of months and you're like, ‘oh, I'm actually really comfortable here’.

The Islamic Society helped me feel connected to home. They’re so welcoming and comforting that you sometimes just go to the prayer room to see people and hang out there. And they have a lot of events that aren't just Islamic related, it's more about the community.

Coming to Lancaster, I felt so much comfort, and I felt so much at home. It helped me become more me. I'm excited for the future, and the world is my oyster, as they say!
