Sunway University and choosing a transfer programme

As the British say: Hiya! My name is Rania, and I am Vice President of Lancaster University Malaysian Student Society (LUMSS). Before I came to Lancaster University, I was an Entrepreneurship student at Sunway University, and luckily Lancaster had this course as well!

Initially, deciding to go for the 1+2 transfer programme was not an easy choice as studying abroad is generally more expensive with the extra fee as an international student. However, the more I researched Lancaster University, from the campus and environment to the student support system, the more interested I became, and eventually, I decided to give it a shot! I can proudly say that a year in, I do not regret enrolling myself at this university. What I have experienced in a European university is truly indescribable... you would just have to see it for yourself! But if I had to tell you the biggest reason why it was all worth it for me, besides the Lancaster ducks that greet you every day, it would be the incredible support from the lecturers and staff. They’re always there to give you the help you need, which is something I’ve never experienced anywhere else. I also can’t forget to mention how you can walk alone at 3am around the campus and feel so safe. If I were to summarise my time in Lancaster, it would be:“Being a student here means having a balance of being a human with emotional needs and a hectic student lifestyle.”

Now let’s get into the hard bit as a 1+2 Sunway-Lancaster student: the process of preparing to be an international student. I would say that in my case, I was incredibly lucky to be in the April intake instead of the September intake, as UK universities usually start their term in September/October. I would advise students who are considering Lancaster to enrol in the April intake of the programme to help with the easiness your journey.

Lancaster life and advice

Here are some things you must know before you come to Lancaster. Firstly, apply to Lancaster Uni through UCAS, and you will receive your conditional offer after a few days/weeks. When you ⁠⁠accept the offer, you must send over your official Year 1 results to receive the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies Details (CAS) from Lancaster University. ⁠You will also need to apply for your student visa where you have to provide your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies Details (CAS). The visa usually takes 3-4 weeks to be approved (unless paid for fast track).

I would just like to slip in a huge shoutout to the Sunway-LU office during my time of transitioning, who helped answer so many questions regarding the procedures mentioned above. With that said, do not be afraid to reach out to whoever is in charge as I can assure you that they are extremely friendly and helpful.

My biggest piece of advice for anyone who is considering studying at Lancaster University is to look out for and attend the pre-departure briefing that LUMSS organises every year!
