Sunway University and choosing a transfer programme

Hello! My name is Loknath Ari Krishnan, but I’m better known as Loki. I’m currently the President of the Lancaster University Malaysian Student Society. I was doing a degree in Finance at Sunway University and, thankfully, I’m continuing the same course at Lancaster.

I decided to do the 1+2 transfer programme because I felt that it would give me the opportunity to experience something different, meet lots of new and interesting people, and experience complete independence. I also wanted the chance to travel, explore the world and try as many new things as possible.

Sunway University generally does a great job of preparing students for the academic style at Lancaster, especially when it comes to coursework and research. A lot of the academic practices at Sunway are quite similar to those at Lancaster, so I found the transition much easier than I expected. Lancaster’s student advisers have also been really helpful whenever I’ve had questions about certain procedures and things I felt unsure about.

Campus life and making new friends

My favourite part about Lancaster would definitely be the friends I’ve made and all the activities we get involved in together, especially through societies. Every day, something new comes up, and it’s always fun to do crazy things with people you really get along with. Travelling to different cities, trying new food and drinks, and simply exploring new places are also some of my favourite things to do.

My advice would 100% be to go to Lancaster University. Not only will you have so many new experiences, but you’ll also gain new insights and perspectives. I definitely think that living independently allows you to grow as a person and mature much more. I never really knew what to expect when taking on this transfer programme, but I’m really glad I took the leap and decided to go for it. I’ve had fun almost every day - except, of course, when assignments are due! Regardless, the journey here so far has been nothing short of fun.

I would say the biggest benefit of studying at Lancaster, particularly from a career perspective, is that having a degree from a UK university can be beneficial when applying to local companies. I also feel that studying here requires you to think for yourself a lot more. You have to figure things out through trial and error, but I think that process helps you learn much quicker. Personally, I feel that I’ve gained a lot of new experiences, especially when it comes to talking to new people, and I’ve become much more confident in both social and professional settings.

Looking to the future

As for my future plans, I intend to complete internships with at least three companies, including at least one bank. My main goal is to gain as much practical experience as possible, develop valuable skills, and strengthen my CV. After completing my internships, I plan to pursue the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) qualification, as I believe it would further strengthen my knowledge and improve my prospects for entry-level roles in finance.

If I am able to secure suitable internship opportunities and build a strong career path in the UK, I plan to stay here and begin my career. However, if that is not possible, I would be happy to return to Malaysia and continue developing my career there.
