A critical lens onto world affairs

The relationship between academia and the real world is central to this course. Many of Lancaster’s experts have experience in engaging with policymakers, so they will teach you how to translate theory into practice.

You will gain an understanding of the range of debates and discussions raised by past and present approaches to the subject, giving you the critical analysis and research skills to succeed in this field.

You’ll explore the latest trends in international relations and develop the intellectual tools necessary for analysing international relations, diplomacy and foreign policy. With optional modules you can choose your focus, from peace and security to regional politics and the Global South.

Evidence-based analysis

From policymaking to fieldwork, you’ll practice using a range of analytical and research tools and learn to assess which are the most appropriate tools to investigate different situations. This will help to ensure that your analysis of complex global issues is robust and based on sound evidence.

Combined with your understanding of key theories and concepts, your advanced analytical skills will be valuable in professional roles across a range of different sectors.

To build relevant professional experience, using the knowledge and skills developed during the course, you will have the opportunity to apply to our internship programme with the Richardson Institute for Peace Studies. Working with an organisation in this sector, you will experience policymaking in practice.

The knowledge, skills and experience you develop during the course will be brought together in your dissertation, where you’ll choose a topic that is important to you. You'll investigate this topic in depth with the support of one of our academic team, an expert in this area.

Careers

The course is suitable for students from a wide range of academic backgrounds and careers. MA International Relations is an opportunity to extend your previous educational and work experience in new directions, and demonstrate your abilities at an advanced level, whether you have recently completed undergraduate study or are established in your career.
