Lonsdale Alumnus Donates Share of Book Proceeds to Headway Brain Charity

Duncan Smith book

Graduate Duncan Smith was encouraged to turn his notes written as part of his cycling accident recovery about his fascinating career into a book which has now been published.

Duncan was a member of Lonsdale college and studied law at Lancaster (1984-87). He then became a barrister by passing professional law exams in London. After working as a prosecutor of corporate fraud, corruption and insolvency offences for the Department of Trade and Industry and the Serious Fraud Office, he joined the Investigations team at World Bank in Washington DC in 2000. Later in 2007, he joined the EIB and moved his family (his wife and three daughters, one of whom later completed a Master's at Lancaster and another is currently studying geography and economics at LU) to Luxembourg. He is now Deputy Head of Investigations.

As part of his recovery from a serious cycling accident in 2018, he wrote himself some notes about his job and the lessons learned in his career. These notes were read by a a visiting friend (Rev Jim Cox, also a graduate of Lancaster) and he suggested the notes should form the basis of a book entitled Promoting Integrity in the work of International Organisations: Minimising Fraud and Corruption in Projects.

The book not only provides information for law, integrity, governance and accountancy students but is also useful for practitioners and those involved in implementing a wide range of projects (as part of the implementing agency, one of the suppliers, consultants or contractors involved or observing progress as an independent third party monitor).

Duncan is donating his share of the book sales proceeds (that he receives from Springer) to Headway, a UK-based brain injury charity.
