Wellbeing Trail to be planted to mark Queen's Jubilee

Following recent celebrations, 70 individual species of native tree will be planted at Lancaster University to represent each year of Her Majesty’s reign, creating a dedicated wellbeing route around the edges of campus.

The trees, which are funded by the Friends Programme, will form The Queen's Canopy Wellbeing Trail that will start from the Pre-School Centre and end with a dedicated space within the woodland close to the Sports Centre.

The new space will provide a quiet, relaxing environment that can be enjoyed by all as a place to take time out and reconnect with nature. Student societies have also shown some interest in the plans - the grounds team are liaising with students and staff across campus to ensure the potential use of the space is maximised. Plans are in development and will be announced later in the year.

The trail will be planted by the University’s grounds team, together with student and staff volunteers from Green Lancaster and across campus. Because of planting seasons, the 70 British species of tree will be planted during Autumn and Winter 2022.

During this year of celebration, the grounds team, together with children at the University’s Pre-School Centre, have already planted 420 saplings that were donated by the Woodland Trust to form an area of dedication to the Queen's Green Canopy initiative. This provides a place for future generations of children to visit and learn about the importance of trees and the part they play in nature.
