From Sunway to Lancaster
Hello, My name is Wah Yu Jun. I was an undergraduate in BSc Accounting and Finance in Sunway University who was given the wonderful opportunity to study MSc Finance in Lancaster University after the completion of my studies in Sunway. I was motivated to apply to study in Lancaster as I was attracted to the prospect of obtaining a master’s programme at a world-renowned institution with a generous scholarship.
My time of studying in Lancaster is simply unforgettable. It was an exceptional experience made possible by the impeccable faculty support and deep bonds of friendship forged through irreplaceable memories and navigating challenges together during and after assignments and exams. A personal memory that I would like to share was my daily visit to the restaurant ‘KC’s’ in Alexandra Square during exam season. The food there is exquisite, the prices are reasonable and it is a 2-minute walk away from the library. I am rather certain that being able to skip cooking and head straight back to the library gave me the extra time and focus I needed to excel in my exams.
Advice for prospective students
Moving on, I would like to encourage any future applicant from Sunway to actively engage with international and local students while in Lancaster. I have observed that often, some Malaysian students only socialise with other Malaysians, and I believe this limits the overall richness of their experience in Lancaster. On a final and lighter note, it is cheaper to order your groceries online from Tesco with saver deliveries than actually going down to Town (from my experience, the difference is £2.50 per trip) and the online store has a significantly wider spread of products compared to its counterpart in town. Also, the store ‘KF Oriental’, which is located right across from the bus stop on Common Garden Street is run by Malaysians. You can easily find Malaysian ingredients there, just in case you start craving for a taste of home. Good luck with your application to Lancaster!
