Surrounded by legal experts

We’re carrying out leading research in a variety of areas – international law and human rights, crime, child and family justice, law and society, and more. All this work means our teaching on legal, jurisprudential and socio-legal issues is always informed by the latest practice.

Our Research Methods in Law module will give you insight into theoretical approaches to the study of law, as well as practical guidance on research design and ethics.

Carry out your own in-depth project

You’ll apply your knowledge to a dissertation which will address a key legal question or issue. Past students have looked at areas like terrorism, breaches of human rights in the garments industry, and legal issues in VR and the metaverse.

Carrying out your own research is a brilliant opportunity to contribute to the legal and academic community with new, original research and writing. You’ll have support from your supervisor throughout every step of the process.

Careers

Studying with us, you’ll build a network of academics, peers and alumni. All of these connections will help broaden your perspective, boost your expertise, and prepare for whatever you decide to do next.

You might decide to take the next step in your career. Or perhaps you’ll contribute to important legal research to help move forward understanding in specialist areas.

The ability to critically evaluate research is in demand in both public and private sectors. Your effective communication skills will help you stand outside the legal sector too.

The course is suitable for:

  • Those aiming to be legal professionals who want a wider, critical appreciation of the law
  • Those already working in the legal system who want an in-depth research qualification as Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

  • Anyone interested in an in-depth grounding and the development of critique in technical legal areas.

  • Charities
  • Judicial services

To show our commitment to your success, we work with two Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) training providers – Barbri and BPP. These organisations provide out students with discounts, free training modules, masterclasses and events, and careers advice.

This course is also the ideal stepping stone to PhD study, where you can continue to explore an area of law that interests you.
