The study of computers and computational systems is a dynamic discipline with a diverse range of career paths. This programme provides you with a unique blend of academic content and exciting industrial experience, working with leading organisations in contemporary technology-based environments.

Our Computer Science programme provides you with the knowledge and skills required to become a computing professional. Delivering a broad yet rigorous grounding in computer science, this programme uses both theoretical and practical learning approaches, and provides you with the opportunity to gain high-level professional experience, working with one of our exciting partners in industry. You will gain cutting-edge knowledge and skills through state-of-the-art equipment and expert teaching offered at the School of Computing and Communications.

In your first year, you will receive a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of the discipline, combined with their modern day application. Throughout your study, you will gain skills and experience from a range of modules, including Software Development, Information Systems, and Digital Systems. Taking a practical approach to education, you are encouraged to build and analyse systems and software, as well as work with end user feedback to refine and adapt solutions.

After gaining an overview of the subject in the first year, you will be motivated by topics that become progressively deeper and more specialised as your skills develop throughout second and third year. In addition to progressing your foundational understanding, programming, and software design skills, you will explore social, ethical and professional issues related to the discipline and will complete a group project. This will prepare you for and give you experience of computing in the real-world.

Your third year will also give you the opportunity to explore a range of well-constructed and enriching optional modules, as well as undertaking an individual project. In this project you will work closely with one of our academics, allowing you to use and further develop the skills acquired throughout your degree.

Your fourth year will present you with a range of advanced modules as well as practical and professional experience. Blending contemporary technical training with advanced professional development, you will complete a variety of integrated industry activities during a dedicated ten-week industry placement. This is complemented with a further seven-week fourth-year project. Together, this will allow you to apply the skills you have learnt while gaining valuable real-world experience.

Assessment

We offer an excellent range of learning environments, which include traditional lectures, laboratories and workshops. We are also committed to providing timely feedback for all submitted work and projects.

Assessment varies across modules, allowing students to demonstrate their capabilities in a range of ways, including laboratory reports, essays, exercises, literature reviews, short tests, poster sessions, oral presentations, and formal examination.

Programmes are currently accredited up to and including the 2017 intake with future years pending re-accreditation from BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. Studying a BCS-accredited degree provides the foundation for professional membership of the BCS on graduation and is the first step on the pathway to becoming a chartered IT professional. Students must pass the project without compensation.

Careers

Computer science is a vast but specialised subject; as a result, our degree equips you with the technical and professional skills necessary to apply yourself to a broad range of careers. Our graduates have gone on to work with major technology companies such as IBM, Google, BBC, and BAE, while others have chosen to take their software design, development and management skills to SMEs, or have set up their own technology-centric businesses. Many of our computer scientists also elect to study for MSc or PhD qualifications.

We provide careers advice and host a range of events throughout the year, including our annual careers fair, attended by exhibitors who are interested in providing placements and vacancies to computer science students and graduates. You can speak face-to-face with employers such as Network Rail, Oracle, and Johnson and Johnson, in addition to a large range of SMEs.

Required Subjects We are committed to encouraging the adoption of the new A level Computing curriculum and recognising desirable subjects. Students applying with an A level or IB Higher Level in Computing, Computer Science or Mathematics will be considered for a lower offer.

GCSE Mathematics grade B or 6, English Language grade C or 4

Course Structure

Lancaster University offers a range of programmes, some of which follow a structured study programme, and others which offer the chance for you to devise a more flexible programme to complement your main specialism. We divide academic study into two sections - Part 1 (Year 1) and Part 2 (Year 2, 3 and sometimes 4). For most programmes Part 1 requires you to study 120 credits spread over at least three modules which, depending upon your programme, will be drawn from one, two or three different academic subjects. The following courses do not offer modules outside of the subject area due to the structured nature of the programmes: Architecture, Law, Physics, Engineering, Medicine, Sports and Exercise Science, Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedicine and Biomedical Science.

We offer a wide range of scholarships and bursaries to prospective undergraduate students. Academic Scholarships are for students with a strong performance in their A levels, or equivalent qualification. A future for Alex

When I came to the University on my offer holder day it was the conversations with the academic staff and the interactive workshops they ran that convinced me that Lancaster was the place for me. Getting to see the passion the academics have for their subject and how this translated into teaching was a great eye-opener for me, and happily, this has translated into three years of immense learning and uncovering my own enthusiasm for Computer Science.

Coming into University I had some programming experience through high school, but what I didn’t yet appreciate was the breadth of the subject and how programming can be applied in so many different scenarios. Through the second year Databases and Computer Networks, and the third year Distributed Systems and Artificial Intelligence modules I discovered how Computer Science and coding extend to so much more than just making games, as is commonly perceived.

The course has made clear to me the direction I want to head in with my career, and when I graduate this summer, I will be starting as a Software Engineer at an exciting, fast-paced technology company in the Midlands. The range of content I have learned and the passion with which I was taught at Lancaster have been pivotal factors in me achieving this long-held ambition.
