International Borders and Performance: Challenges for Creative Practice
Dr Cami Rowe
This talk will address elements of performance and theatricality that are fundamental to the construction of international borders. Alongside this, the talk will describe recent theatrical works that seek to challenge immigration policies by siting performance art at borders. From security rituals to strategic presentations of identity, border performances are intertwined with notions about the future – the possible and desired futures for both nations and people. It is thus worthwhile to consider the capacity of creative theatrical practices to disrupt or alter border control norms. The talk will conclude with a proposal for a practice-based research project to be developed at US and UK border sites.
