As a mechanical engineer, I opted to do all things mechanical. Me and my fellow mechanical engineer got to work designing the chassis of the robot, first through pencil sketches. After that, we came up with ideas for a firing mechanism for the badminton shuttle. We narrowed down our ideas and settled on our favourite, before modelling everything in SOLIDWORKS using CAD. Once we had the design work done, we got to manufacturing it, and used various processes like acrylic laser cutting, 3D printing, wire cutting and even just regular hand tools to make our robot a reality. It was really fun, and I enjoyed it a lot.
It was really cool to see other students doing the work they wanted to specialise in. For a long time, circuitry seemed like magic, but students in my group were great at it and I picked up a few things from them by being involved.
The module was designed to take us through all parts of an engineering project – from project management, to ideation, to concept development, to physical manufacturing processes, to report writing and so much more. All of these steps are crucial to success in many engineering roles, but I think the one skill I really developed was problem solving on my feet by developing trust in myself.”
