Senior Lecturer


I am a climate scientist, using computer models and observations to understand the composition and climate of the atmosphere. I am interested in how the climate, greenhouse gases, air quality and the ozone layer can be studied using data science techniques, as well as how these problems intersect with society (including the private and public sectors). I am also the Associate Director of The Pentland Centre and an affiliate of Lancaster's Data Science Institute. You can follow me on twitter or send an email.


I work mostly with large environmental datasets from models and observations, studying tropospheric and stratospheric composition and change, climate change, air quality, and biosphere-atmosphere links. Current projects include Models in the Cloud (leveraging computer science expertise to make running environmental models more straightforward), and a project to understand and better quantify uncertainty in global atmospheric chemistry models. At Lancaster, I am the Associate Director of The Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business, as well as an affiliate of the Data Science Institute.

Outside Lancaster, I am a member of the Scientific Steering Committee for the IGAC/SPARC Chemistry-Climate Model Initiative (CCMI), which is an international climate modelling project that is seeking to understand changes in the composition of the troposphere and the stratosphere, from the latter half of the 20th century and projecting into the future. I hosted the 2014 CCMI Workshop at Lancaster.

I am a coordinating lead author on the upcoming IGAC Tropospheric Ozone Assessment Report and an author on the upcoming 2018 WMO Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion. I was a co-author for the 2014 WMO Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion, and I was also a contributing author to two chapters of the IPCC 5th Assessment Report. I teach a 3rd year/Masters-level course on Global Change and the Earth System (LEC378 and LEC477). This covers topics in the IPCC reports, as well as global Earth system models and the links between climate and stratospheric ozone, and climate and air quality. It also includes a field trip to the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) and practical sessions at Lancaster's Hazelrigg Met Station.

I also teach a first year maths course (LEC181) for students coming into our degree programmes without a maths A-level.

Other roles

I was preivously the LEC Careers and Alumni tutor, acting as a bridge between our students and the careers advice provided centrally, and seeking to engage our alumni in our current activities.
